The University
Carlo will study at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City. For more information on USC, visit their website.
With its four campuses, including eight colleges and 27 departments, the University of San Carlos is a diverse and robust institution. Foreign students and visiting professors make USC a multicultural academic community tied together by the common pursuit of superior educational standards.
I visited USC several times while in the Philippines because JPIC-IDC works closely with them for a number of scholars programs, and their offices are actually located right next door. Carlo will be monitored closely by JPIC and has signed a scholars contract with them. You can read the contract further down on this page.

The NGO: JPIC-IDC
JPIC-IDC, or Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation, is not a part of San Carlos University, although they partner with them for a number of projects. They are an independent non-profit organization who I worked with while in the Philippines on my fellowship with Dekesyer & Friends. D&F partnered with JPIC to learn about and have access to a number of local rehousing programs and projects. We spent two months at the beginning of the fellowship touring various programs in the region run by JPIC and then spent four months working closely with two community projects in Cebu also run by JPIC.
JPIC's efforts range from programs to help street children, to building community co-ops, and providing resources and shelter for women in the red light district. I met Carlo through one of JPIC's rehousing projects, in Talisay. Carlo's education at San Carlos will be supervised and managed by JPIC's young scholar's program. JPIC works closely with the University to provide an opportunity for select accomplished students from their various rehousing projects to get a University degree. These opportunities are incredibly competitive and there is never enough funding or places in the program for all of the students who would like to participate. Occasionally, like in Carlo's case, someone offers to sponsor a student independently. In this case, the student is still enrolled in the young scholar's program, and the only difference is the funding is coming from a different source.
Carlo has signed the JPIC College Scholar's Contract (below) will be pretty busy once he's in school, keeping up with his classes and homework and making sure he meets the JPIC scholar requirements. JPIC has committed to providing updates on Carlo's progress and grades four times per year.
